ADHD & Time Management: How To Support Employees.

Managing time isn’t always as simple as creating a to-do list or setting a few reminders. For people who have ADHD, differences in executive functioning can affect how they experience time, prioritise tasks, manage focus and get started, even when they know exactly what needs to be done.

For employers, understanding these differences is an important first step. With the right support and a little flexibility, you can help your employees find ways of working that play to their strengths rather than expecting them to fit into systems that don’t work for them.

Here are some of the common challenges your ADHD employees may experience with time management and ways you can support them:

Time Blindness & Experiencing Time Differently

Time blindness is a common experience for people who have ADHD and can make it harder to sense how much time has passed or estimate how long a task might take. This can make deadlines, transitions between tasks and keeping track of appointments more challenging.

As an employer, you can support your employee by introducing visual time cues, calendar reminders or time-blocking techniques. The key is to work together to find tools and strategies that suit how they experience and manage time, rather than expecting one approach to work for everyone.

Managing Priorities

With lots of thoughts and ideas competing for attention, deciding what to focus on first can be more challenging for people who have ADHD, particularly when several tasks feel equally important or urgent. Your employee may benefit from additional clarity around what needs their attention and when.

Breaking larger tasks into manageable steps, using a priority matrix or having regular planning sessions together can provide clearer direction, reduce overwhelm and make it easier to focus on what matters most.

Managing Multiple Tasks

When several tasks compete for attention, switching between them can require extra mental energy and make it harder to maintain momentum. Supporting your employee to find a way of working that suits them can help make their workload feel more manageable.

Project management tools like Trello or Asana can provide a clear visual overview, break larger tasks into smaller steps and make it easier to see what needs attention. Some employees may prefer focusing on one task at a time, while others may work better with the flexibility to move between tasks.

Finding Focus & Motivation

For people who have ADHD, motivation and focus can naturally vary depending on factors such as interest, urgency and stimulation. Tasks that feel repetitive or less engaging may require more energy to begin or complete, even when they’re important.

Regular check-ins can provide useful structure and accountability, while recognising progress can help maintain momentum. Work with your employee to understand what helps them feel engaged and supported, and build those approaches into their working day.

Finding What Works for Your Employees

With the right environment and support, people who have ADHD can find ways of managing their time that work with their individual needs. Personalised systems, regular check-ins and clear priorities can provide helpful structure while giving employees the flexibility to work in ways that suit them.

Whether that includes accountability, task management tools or tailored working strategies, the most effective approach starts with understanding the individual and what helps them do their best work.

When we support different ways of working, we create space for people to thrive.
